As someone who strives to understand the other person’s point of view and to forgive, I think this sentence is one of the most profound that I have read:
“”
I had been proud of my capacity for forgiveness, but the mere fact that I was ashamed to describe the details of what I had forgiven made me wonder if that chapter of my life had really been resolved.

Connecting the dots...
by Rich Austin-ILWU Retired
We hear it every day. States and the federal government are having to reduce funding for essential human services, (Some people call such services "entitlements." The definition of "entitlements" is then twisted in order to frame such services as hand-outs to the 'undeserving'). Those who do not agree that everyone is "entitled" to a decent job paying family-sustaining wages, adequate housing, health care, good public education, and security in retirement, are in league with labor-haters like the Heritage Foundation.
According to a 2008 study by economists Joseph Stiglitz and Linda Bilmes, the Iraq war will cost us $3 trillion and more. (They have since revised that figure to $4+ trillion.) Other respected economists, including Dean Baker, are in agreement with Stiglitz and Bilmes. Their findings can be accessed at:
http://www.washingt onpost.com/ wp-dyn/content/ article/2008/ 03/07/AR20080307 02846.html
The report tells us that federal discretionary funding for states and municipalities is being reduced because federal funds are being diverted to prosecute two wars. The several trillion dollar Bush tax cuts for the rich have likewise taken their toll. Federal and state programs are going under-funded because money is being siphoned-off by war profiteers and the top 5%.
When there are downturns in the economy public workers, and especially unionized public workers, find themselves in the crosshairs. Publicly funded community agencies suffer the same fate. Incredibly and sadly, the bleating of groups like the Heritage Foundation are too often joined by working class antagonists. It seems that as long as their ox isn't being gored everyone else is fair game!
Connect the dots! War, tax breaks for the rich, and politicians beholden to the wealthiest 5% are crippling our economy! Worse, however, is the social and economic injustice that is harming the most vulnerable amongst us. Rather than addressing those national maladies, too many people are looking for the easy way out, and pubic employees and funding for essential human services are convenient targets.
85% of Americans earn less than $100,000 per year (55% have incomes below $50,000). Isn't it time for us to look out for one another rather than continuing to cede our power to a tiny fraction of super rich power brokers (and their stooges we call "lawmakers")? A starting point is letter writing to newspapers as a way to change the national dialogue. Resolutions to city, county, and state governmental bodies is another. But make no mistake about it, more activism will be needed. As Frederick Douglas stated, "If there is no struggle there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate agitation, want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightening. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters.. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will."

Rather than admitting they were suckered, they double-down on their error by alibiing his senseless tirades and his evil-spirited agenda.
P.T. Barnam was right: “There’s a sucker born every minute”.
Then they grow up and vote Republican.

Something to ponder

Something to ponder.....
There are donor states and there are taker states. The former contribute more dollars to the federal government than they receive from the federal government. The latter does just the reverse. They get more than they give.
Would it surprise you to learn that 9 out of 10 of the top taker states are red, and most are south of the Mason-Dixon line? Imagine that! States who elect Republican demagogues who then rant and rave about “welfare” are biting off their own noses to spite their faces.
Hey! If that is the way they want it, let’s oblige them! Let’s quit subsidizing hypocritical taker states with our tax dollars.

Stopping Armageddon
The United States faces a trap of its own making. For decades, this country has forcibly overthrown regimes it deemed to be hostile to U.S. interests. North Korea fears that it is next.

I attended a department meeting yesterday, so I had a 90-minute break before my first class started at 1:00

I attended a department meeting yesterday, so I had a 90-minute break before my first class started at 1:00. I headed over to Kelly's, the funkiest bar in New Brunswick--here you will find no craft beers, but you can get a hamburger for one dollar. You read that right.
It's the kind of place you'll find on Fell's Point, in Baltimore, or the old North Side, in Chicago. The crowd turns over day to night, from working stiffs to college students. At lunchtime in Kelly's, you'll be listening to construction workers and retired guys. Later on, you'll be hearing Rutgers students debate the merits of the education they're getting three blocks away. Or off-duty cops playing darts.
Yesterday I was sitting at the bar between retired guys, one of whom ordered a tankard of vodka: I mean a pint of the stuff. The really old guy on my right--he was at least 80--was drinking Bud Lite from a plastic tumbler and mumbling about something, shaking his head.
Now Kelly's has a classic rock soundtrack. You'll hear a lot of Chuck Berry, Rolling Stones, Bob Seger, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, guys with great ambitions and strong bass lines. As I ate my one-dollar burger and sipped my Bud Lite (from a bottle, thank you), I noticed that the really old guy was playing the bar like a drum. I mean, this guy is really, truly old, and there he was sounding away, fingers cupped. Not loud or anything, more like precise and emphatic instead. He knew what he was doing, and he was into it.
Then Dylan comes on, "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," and the really old guy starts singing, for God's sake. Softly at first, but he's into this, too. Good Christ, by the time the song is over, I'm singing along, whisperingly but joyously, because it feels like a conspiracy--I can tell that he's been singing harmony, and I can see that nobody else has noticed our vocal collaboration.
As I get up to leave, I say, "That was cool. You can sing."
He mumbles and shakes his head, drinks some Bud Lite. He doesn't turn away from the bar, toward me. So I say, "Merry Christmas," and head for class. Later, on my way home, I say, just to myself, "That's what I want to be when I grow up."

Today was final project/performance day in my Capitalism: The History course

Today was final project/performance day in my Capitalism: The History course. I encourage everybody to get creative, write a poem, sing a song, show us a graphic novel. But a lot of students write term papers because the alternatives, as I outline them, are just a pain in the ass--they're not liberating, they're just silly. I get that. Still.
Today, we sang a song, written collectively, called "Capitalism: The Blues." In the key of G. I played rhythm, Mike played lead (on a classical guitar!), Adam played keyboard, Tony played bass, and Joey played the snare. Too many guys, OK. We also watched a video of "my" students disrupting the Rutgers Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday. And we heard, I admit faintly, from people who aren't happy with the course itself.
But the highlight of the session was a poem--a rap, really--from a person who can't be named for fear of future retribution by prospective employers, who will find his/her creation on the Internet. We're gonna run it at P/L Live.
Holy fuck. Can you tihnk that far ahead? I can't. Maybe Odysseus isn't the guy I need just now.

Hell, no

Hell, no. The Republicans have behaved like the Slave Power for so long--keep that Senate majority and keep the contributions coming, whatever the moral cost might be--that they thought they'd get away with this, too, hell yes, they whispered, let's send a moron who's also a pedophile to Washington, we need that vote.
Hell, no, said the black voters of Alabama, in thunder. The demographics are fascinating--mothers voted overwhelmingly against Moore, but white women went 2 to 1 for the would-be cowboy with the toy gun. WTF? As in 2008 and 2012, the difference was precisely the black vote the Supreme Court has ruled out of order, or rather, has allowed states to suppress.
Now what? Everything is moving left, even in fucking Alabama, so let's get with this turn of the crimson tide. Call me Deacon Blue.
